A Thanksgiving Day Home Water Birth with Midwives

The Birth Story of Theo

This was Mom and Dad’s third baby and they knew right away that they would be attempting a home birth for this babe. Their first was born in the hospital. Their second was born in a birth center with midwives. This one they were prepared for a birth experience of being in the comfort of their own home.

I attended the home visit in their home as I usually do for my home birth clients as we neared the end of their pregnancy. I always enjoy getting together with the birth team that mom created prior to delivery so that we can sit down and listen to their birth plan and get a tour of their home. It helps us get an idea of where they wish and expect to deliver their baby.

Her last two babies came after 40 weeks, so she was sure that the same thing would happen this time around. Just days before Thanksgiving Mom came down with a cold and it seemed that baby had other plans as to when he would make his appearance. I got the call in the wee hours of Thanksgiving Day that her water had broken. We were going to be meeting Theo sooner rather than later.

8:15 am – Contractions coming and going in waves, but were around 9-10 minutes apart.

9:09 am – Contractions now around 7 minutes apart and the sibling doula called out

11:57 am – Contractions more intense and midwife called out to check her

12:11 pm – Mom texted requesting that I come over

I arrived around 30 minutes later and beat everyone else on the birth team. It was obvious that we were nearing active labor. The rest of the birth team arrived which included Midwife Jackie Griggs, her student Midwife Rowan Twosisters and her emotional support Dr. Blythe Twosisters.

At 3:05 pm Theo made his appearance. He had a bit of a rough start in breathing, so his cord was cut and CPR was performed in order for him to come to. Within what seemed like hours, was only minutes and he quickly pinked up and was placed back into his mom’s arms. His older brothers were so excited to meet him.
