A Surprise Gender and Home Water Birth with Midwives in Spring Branch

The Birth of Wren

This sweet family was referred to me from their doula, Nina Spears with The Baby Chick. I attended and captured her own home birth and was so grateful that she shared her repeat clients with me. They planned to deliver with midwife Nanci Stanley and student midwife Mary Alice in the comfort of their home and hoped to have a water birth.

Late on a Tuesday evening, Dad texted the birth team that Mom had heard two loud pops and was thinking that her water had broken. By 1 am, contractions were coming every 2-4 minutes and lasting 45-60 seconds long. 15 minutes later, it was requested that the birth team join them. By 2 am the full birth team was in place and by mom’s side. Contractions were intense, but mom was only around 3 cm. Nanci suggested that she get into a runner’s position with one leg up on the bed and go through several contractions. It did the trick. Within 20-30 minutes, Mom was 8 cm and ready to get into the tub.

Mom was moved into the tub and felt most comfortable in a hands and knees position. Just a few contractions later, the urge to push came and we welcomed their sweet girl into her arms. Make sure and watch their birth film with sound on so that you can catch the moment when Dad announced that it was a girl. Much to our surprise, older brother woke up came into the room minutes after Wren was born and got to meet her in all her freshness.
